I've just begun reading the Romanian translation of the first part from Midan's PHD thesis, "Armee roumaine a la veille de la Deuxieme Guerre Mondiale", translated as "Carol a II-lea şi teroarea istoriei 1930-1940".
Has anybody read it or know about this book or the author? (much like Deletant, he also has a Romanian wife... ) -------------------- M

As I said in that series of posts, I red the book and I warmly recommend it. Please take a look here and at the following page: http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=5658&st=15
It would be, in my opinion, both interesting and useful if the publisher (Editura militara) will decide to translate and publish the entire work/thesis of the author, consisting in several volumes and 1000+ pages (plus annexes and illustrations). I'm sure there are lots of interesting and detailed information there; perhaps we should write a collective letter to the publishing house manager in order to persuade him to do it. I agree with the initiative.
Any fresh view on this particular part of Rumanian history is welcome. Gen. Dénes |

Great idea! But in these times, it's hard to believe they will agree (they as in Editura Militară, that is...).
BTW, I already found an "oltenism" in the translation: "recolta a fost strânsă după 10.000 de hectare"! Watch out, it's contagious!!!! -------------------- M

Denes and MMM, thank you very much for your support!
MMM, you may be right but I guess we might nevertheless try. If there are no alternate proposals I could write the letter to be sent to the publishing house manager, of course taking into account all your ideas and suggestions. Those who are willing to sign the letter could/are welcome to contact me via private messaging. If I’m not mistaking, the manager (director) of Editura Militară (still) is Mr. Adrian Pandea; perhaps those of you who live in Bucureşti should know that better. With him, I had a very fortunate experience (although following an unlucky episode) about a year ago. I had ordered a batch of books from that publisher using the internet (for me to read during the vacation), the order/delivery was dragging, my holyday was already over and the people from the publishing house (costumer relations section) were giving me incredible and absurd answers. In that situation I wrote, in a sort of exasperation, to Mr. Pandea and the first thing next morning I received his answer with apologies and explanations - and in a few days the pack with the books. I have to admit that after reading Midan’s book - and learning about the unpublished fragments - I’ve thought of writing Mr. Pandea an individual letter, in order to express my ideas about how appropriate a translation of these would be, even though without much hope of influencing the publisher’s policies. Nice! I guess that some of us would even like to "pre-order" the book(s) to follow, so as the Military Publishing House will be convinced of our honorable intentions...

I haven't received any PMs until now. That means nobody's interested?

RE: another „error” in Midan's book: there appears (page 187) a 32-th Infantry Division. I never heard of such a Division! Is it possible that Midan is referring to 35-th Div.? The context is about the Soviet menacing behaviour, so „Romanian forces are being concentrated on the Dniester - decided at 08.04.1940 - and the 32-nd Division is moved on th Eastern Front” So in april 1940 there already was such a division, or was it not?

The site of Dan Grecu http://reocities.com/MotorCity/Freeway/7333/DI.html lists the Divizia 32 infanterie as ”formed 3.9.1939 in Brăila; disbanded by 9.1941”. The book ”Armata Română 1941-1945., Editura RAI, 1996.” lists the Divizia 32 infanterie (rezervă) as formed in 1941[sic!] and disbanded in the summer of 1941, see pages 100, 101 and 154. So you need to find another sources for this mysterious division! |

So I did! I found the info in the book about artillery, which is discussed somewhere here on the forum! It is free to download, as well... „Adrian Stroea (coord.), 165 de ani de existență a artileriei române moderne” There were actualy 9 reserve division created on 05.09.1939, including 32 and 35; from all of them, only D35 has actually entered combat, with the known results. ALL were disbanded in the fall of 1941. Another puzzle solved! LE: here is the thread: artillery book(s) This post has been edited by MMM on September 13, 2013 02:01 pm -------------------- M
