Two questions:
1. Was the toxic gas/chemical warfere employed by the Romanian army, anytime and anywhere in WW1 (1916-1919, West, South or East)? 2. Did any of the Romanians' allies or enemies ever used toxic gas on the Romanian front? |

According to Glenn E Torrey, in the book "romanian battlefront in WW1" - romanian translated edition is "Romania in primul razboi mondial" - a very good book by the way:
In 1917 the Romanians used gas shells during the opening artillery barrage of the Marasti offensive on 24 July. The Germans used gas on 6 August at Marasesti against the Russian 34 Inf Div. It had little efect against men, which all had gas masks, but it killed most of the horses, so the Division had to abandon most of its artillery when it retreated. An endnote attached to this last piece of info says that gas was frequently used by both sides, with little efect on soldiers, but deadly to animals and civilians, but it fails to name any other instance of gas usage, apart from the ones mentioned here. Another occasion was on the afternoon of 14 August, also during the Marasesti battle when the germans bombarded the Romanian 5th ID with gas and explosive shells. Trivia fact (by the same author): although gas was not used in 1916 on the Romanian front, Anthrax viles were found in the German embassy in Bucharest - apparently they intended to infect the army's horses, thus impeding artillery movement. Interesting facts, Vici - thank you very much for the answer! Reading your reply I remembered seeing e strange photo - here on the forum, if I'm not mistaking - of a Romanian soldier wearing an odd-looking gas mask, sometime in 1916 or 1917. |

Found an old thread right in our forum with more info on gas warfare on the Romanian front, earlier in 1917:
