If you can't buy it build it, Order of Carol I.

Hi Together,

since a very long time i admire the highest of all Romanian orders.
Order of Carol I.

Of course as it's very rare so it's very expensive.

So what to do when you still want to have at least a copy ?


Build it in 3D and let make 3D-print.
Well, first things first and that's building.

Forgot to show how it should/will look when the modelling is finished.
As all the original pieces are handmade there is allmost none which looks like another.
As you see on the 3d-model the wings look different, that's because i took another as master then the one original below.

Congratulation for the effort to reproduce a rare item. I will follow the progress as i am willing to reproduce a rare aviation badge, so, i might...actually for sure will have something to learn.

I will mark the order clearly as a repro on the backside, never know.

Came a bit further today.
The eagles head i will keep for the end as it's the most difficult part.

What design software are you using ?
What type of 3D printer do you own ?
Are the various colors obtained directly through the 3D printing process ?

I use Rhino-3D for modelling. It's a Nurbs-software.

The printing i let to the proffessionals. Means i will send the STL-file to a company to print it.

The print will be a plain color.
As you see some things like the feathers and legs are bulky, eg. sharp edches, and need to be shaped manually. I will have to add a lot of detail by carving manually.
This could be done in 3D, but takes much more time then doing it manually.
Aside that it will look more realistic when done manually.


After that i will make a silicon-mould and cast the pieces in resin.
Or will see if somebody can make me casts in aluminum or bronze.

Tommorrow want to finish the medalion on the rear and if it's enough time to start with king Carols portrait on the front medallion.

Finished this weekend the medallion on the back.
As i wasn't happy with the crown i started over from zero and made it new. Like it much better now.




Next step is now the portrait of King Carol I. on the front medallion.

Did this evening the medaillon in front with King Carols portrait.
I took a copy of the actual portrait, then painted it completely in gray.
After that beganto paint the raised face areas with lighter greys and the recessed areas with darker greys.
Then loaded that painted portrait into the 3D program and made a highfield from this bitmap.
It's something like creating a reliefmap in which lighter areas get raised more then darker areas.
It still will be necessary to carve/smooth a bit the portrait on the master. But that will be a easy task.


Now onto the most difficult part, the eagles head.
That will be a challenge for me on this piece.

The 3D modelling is finished.
Now need to look for a company who can print it in 3D.
Then have to carve the 3D-printed master manually.
Doing a mould in Silicon and making a resin-cast.


Will post the next time when i get the printed master.
