The Romanian Aviation day

I could never understand,why we have two Av.Day:The old clasic Av.Day at the 20 Iuly when is the day of the patron saint of the pilots -sfant.Ilie,and a misterious day at the 17 of Iunie -the day Aurel Vlaicu made his first flight in 1910.
If someone is for selebrating Vlaicu's flight ,his welcome.But what about a greater pilot and inventor-Traian Vuia?And even Smaranda Braescu!?
I belive that it all cames from the comunist era when saints were"out".
I'm not much a beliver but I belive that traditions must be kept.

I agree with you.
If the Romanians do not recall the memory of Vuia, who should do it?
Maybe the Hungarians, because Traian Vuia was an Austro-Hungarian citizen? Anyway, not the Brazilians (who built a whole museum for Alberto Santos-Dumont), not the French (who consider Santos-Dumont as French due to his French citizenship), and not the Americans, for which aviation = the Wright brothers, and nothing else.

Vlaicu's airplane had several good features, but like the airplane of Wright brothers, they were more as an exception from the rule.
I am talking about the way you steer and control the plane. 99% of the airplanes built in the 20th century followed the airplane control methods first set by Bleriot.
The tail in the back steers on horizontal plane, but also help the airplane to tilt upward by applying a force downward (and thus annihilate a part of the main lift force developed by the big wing place in front).

Vlaicu's plane can be considered the ancestor of the canard style.
Maybe also the Wright brothers plane can be considered in a canard style. To tilt the plane upward you have to apply a lifting force to a smaller wing placed in front, thus adding lift to the main lift obtained by the main wing placed in the rear.

Considering that the canard style is more efficient (the matter is more complicated, but for the planes of 1910...1920 the complications do not apply), it is interesting to see that the Bleriot style was followed.

I agree with you also about Smaranda Basescu.
Tons of paper were written about Amelia Earhart and Hanna Reish, but who remember today Smaranda Basescu?

If you'd ask me, I believe that Viua's 1st flight should be celebrated, but not as Romanian Air Forces day.

June 17th should be the day of Romanian flight history and/or Romanian aeroplane industry. I'm sure that those things can put up quite an interesting show if managed propperly.
