After seeing a lot of sources concerning the 6.5mm rimmed ammo for the roumanian and dutch mannlicher, I decided to use the old fashioned way of measuring one case (actually there was three).
It turned out to be something like 53.3mm in lenght. I think that concludes it. We are talking about 6.5x53mmR cartridge. Andi |

Hello Wings_of_wrath can you tell me more exactly where did you found that german canister, and where is the bunker, because I am from Constanta and I will like to go and investigate. I also see in Portul Tomis near plaja Modern a fortified strucrure, i don't know it this is a bunker but i will show you pictures tomorrow.

Ah, so that is the difference between an M93 and a Schonauer ! No wonder I was confused! Thanks everybody for the info! Claudiu1988: First of all, please stop posting the same message again and again, all over the place. You're just cluttering the board, and one is more than enough. I found the canister on the small beach below the strech of promenade between the Casino and "Poarta 1". It was accesible via the stairs at the side of the Casino. And if you are in the area, be sure to check the few german bunkers litterd around the place - there is even one under the Casino itself, as wel as the other one I mentioned earlier, under the "Vraja Marii" restaurant. The structure between Modern Beach and Tomis Marina is indeed another german bunker. I can't be to sure right now, but I belive this to be either a type R-612 (Standarized bunker for light artillery) or an MG casemate such as R-112. Also be sure to search for a hexagonal concrete ring from a 37mm AA cannon or Flackvierling 20mm close nearby. I will be posting a thread dedicated exclusively to the WW2 fortifications of Constanta, but first I have to get my information organized, so it might take a while. The Romanian Mannlicher 93 cartridge is 6,5x54R not 6,5x53,3R or 6,5x53R the real size might vary because you probably measured an old (probably found in the ground, affected by firing and corrosion) cartridge case so in that case the result is inconclusive. |

The photos with the fortifications near Constanta were moved to the already existing thread on fortifications: http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=41
Like I already mentioned it to Wings of Wrath, please use that topic for discussions on fortifications. |

I found this photo on a Hungarian forum. It's titled: 'somewhere in Transylvania...'
Quite an interesting and heterogenous collection, I might add. [Source: http://www.netlabor.hu/roncskutatas/] Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on February 10, 2006 06:17 pm |

I visited a personal museum of this kind in a village near Pestera Ursilor, Bihor County. Maybe it's the same one.

That one looks like a German paratrooper's helmet. If so, it's quite valuable, even in such rusted condition.

1- This German canteen has late war webbing straps instead of leather ones, a rear find. 2- This is also a German canteen made of bakelite initially used in the Afrika Korps, also a rear find. @claudiu1988 The owner probably doesn’t know what he has otherwise he would respect them and not hang them outside on a wall; he bought them just because they are old and look good on his wall. You know Murphy’s laws. |

If you ask me, that's an interior wall. The bright lightning suggests an outside location, but that might only be the flash reflecting from the whitewashed walls. I totally agree with you that these obsects should be conserved properly and not hung from nails, but then we reach the finantial aspect.... |
