One of the cities is Roman. Wife's great-aunt owns a farm out there on the old family estate they had prior to the communist arrival/takeover. Plan on heading to western part of country as well, near Arad to look for items left behind from the 8th SS.

"The owner probably doesn’t know what he has otherwise he would respect them and not hang them outside on a wall; he bought them just because they are old and look good on his wall." Hallo Guys; I think the the owner of these items has the right to display them anyway he likes, nearly all the military items are common military equipment, and judging by the condition not all are found in the ground, the condition is too good, for example the covering on the water bottle is Felt a material loved by moths also the leather would darken with age and crack, I think people who have had the items kept in their houses have given them to him. Any of the broken or damaged helmets look typical "ground finds" I would also suspect the red paint is not an original paint job, ww2 fire brigade helmets were black with a brass with a brass "comb" over the top for added protection, And this seems to be lacking the typical "air-ventalation" holes in the side, so its more than likely a normal military helmet thats been painted red. Also with regards a WW2 German para helmet were there any German Para units deployed in Romania WW2.? if not then the item has been obtained someplace else. The bakealite water bottles were also copied under licence by the Bulgarians. the odd looking water bottles between the German felt covered and the bakelite are Austro-hungarian WW1 with no cups. I don't know if german paratroppers were on romanian soil in ww2, I suspect they were, but I remeber a photo of romanian paratroopers with german helmets. So those helmets were definately in Romania -------------------- ~

Hallo, thanks for the quick reply. Well that certainly is an interesting idea, I am not sure if it is documented that German Para equipment was issued to Germany's allies I will have a look around the net and see what I can come up with. Any pictures of Romanian Para Units wearing the helmet would be nice to see. I know that for example, the Czechs, Bulgarians, Hungarians for example had all developed their own type and style of para helmet, independent of the German style. Kevin in Deva. |

The Romanian paratroopers not only used German helmets but also MP-40 (as standard) and triple MP-40 pouches.
This picture is form the book "Armata Romana 1941-1945" by Cornel I. Scafes Horia Vl. Serbanescu, Ioan I. Scafes, Cornel Andonie, Ioan Danila and Romeo Avram. The Romanian army also used, officially, German m38 helmets and Mauser 98k rifles not to mention the diversity of equipment and weapons used unofficially. This picture is from the same book, some helmets even have the German decals. |
