Indeed. I measured it to my other Moisin cartridge, and it matches up perfectly, so it could be an 7.62x53 R Moisin - Nagant. However, that does not explain the very "Austrian" nature of the markings, or the year- did any factory in the Austro-Hungarian Empire produce 7.62X53 in 1891, maybe for export to Russia? Because it wouldn't be logical to manufacture amunition for some rifles you are going to capture 23 years from now...

All the WWI Mosin Nagant rifles were designated md 1891 the year of design. So maybe the Austro-Hungarians made them for captured Mosins and instead of the year of production they stamped the year of the rifle to avoid confusion, as the two cartridges are similar.

Okay, I found it: According to some sources ("A Shooter's Look" and "Gun Page" amid others) when the Moisin-Nagant was introduced in 1891, Tzarist Russia lacked all provisions for the manufacture of the new weapon, so production was leased to other European factories, such as Chatellerault in France, SIG in Switzerland and, *drumroll please*, Steyr in Austria...
And of course, it's not a big leap of imagination that the same factories supplied the ammunition, and one of the cartriges produced then found its way back to Austria-Hungary in the magazine of a captured M 1891... Either that, or the Austrians allready had some ammunition in a warehouse somewhere when the rifles were captured, and they just re-issued it to the troops. Simple as that. |

I recently found this forum and i see that there hasn't been a post since last year,I am very interested in this subject and i would like to hear more about your finds.I am from Hunedoara and I would like to know if someone heard or knows about any battles that took place in ww2 or ww1 in this area, the closest place i know is in Valea Jiului where I did find some ww1 Mannlicher m90 spent cartritge casings.I know another good places for digging it is in Salaj county far from me,but I'm trying to get my hands on a metal detector and hopfuly this spring i will make a trip there. So if anyone knows about any battlefields in Hunedoara county or close to it please let me know, thank you |
