now all I have to do is take the plane all the way to Romania next summer and start searching the battle fields with my metal detector. biggrin.gif

I found instrusctions on how to build a metal detector......I found the info in a 1977th book. I have a little more work on the translation in English.

Aparatul se compune din montajul propriu-zis, incasetat intr-o cutie din material plastic, cadru mobil si legatura dintre ele.
Aparatul functioneaza pe principiul mixtarii a doua frecvente generate de doua oscilatoare echipate cu tranzistorii T1 si, respectiv, T2. Primul oscilator echipat cu tranzistorul T1 are frecventa fixa. Oscilatorul 2, echipat cu tranzistorul T2 are circuitul oscilant L2 C9 realizat sub forma unei bobine-cadru cu dimensiunile de 120x220 mm si un condensator variabil folosit in radioreceptoarele “Cora”. Cele doua frecvente sunt culese de pe rezistentele din emitorii T1 respectiv T2 si mixate de dioda D1. In continuare, semnalul de audiofrecventa rezultat este filtrat de condensatorul C6 care aduce semnalul de inalta frecventa la masa.
Reglare
Se verifica corectitudinea montajului apoi se cupleaza sursa de alimentare cu ajutorul intrerupatorului I.
Se desface legatura in punctul A si se branseaza un aparat de masura in domeniul de 5-10 mA c.c.
Se modifica R 16 pana cand instrumentul ne indica un curent de 2-3 mA, fara semnal la intrare (C7 cu + la masa). In mod asemanator se stabilesc curentii de colector ai lui T3 la 0,6-0,8 mA, respectiv 0,8-1 mA pentru T4.
In continuare trecem la verificarea oscilatoarelor. Se desface priza lui L2 si se monteaza un instrument de 1-2 mA. Se deschide C9 la ½, iar prin tatonare se stabileste C10. La apropierea unui obiect metalic de cadrul L2 instrumentul de masura face un mic salt negativ cu conditia ca C10 sa fie optim ales. In mod asemanator se procedeaza si cu oscilatorul echipat cu tranzistorul T1.
Punctele optime de functionare pentru T1 si T2 s-au gasit la un Ic=0,8 mA.
Caracteristici tehnice
Toate rezistentele sunt de 0,5 W.
Se vor prefera condensatoarele stiroflex.
D1 = EFD 109.
T1, T2 = EFT 317, 319.
T3, T4 = EFT 351, 352, 353.
T5, T6 = EFT 323 cu radiator.
C13, C10, C11, C12 sunt la 12 V.
L1 = 110 spire Cu Em Ø = 0,25 si priza la spira 15 de la colectorul lui T1. S-a folosit miezul si carcasa de la oscilatorul care echipeaza raioreceptorul “Mamaia”.
L2 contine 42 spire Cu Em Ø=0,6 mm si priza la spira 10, numarand de la capatul comun cu C8.
Se bobineaza pe o rama cu dimensiunile 120x220 mm.
Legatura cadrului L2 cu aparatul se realizeaza cu un cablu ecranat avand trei fire si lungimea de 1-1,5 m.
Cu ajutorul acestui aparat s-a putut depista o fisa de marime mijlocie ingropata la 0,5 m in pamant.
