C-2, Yes I have fired a P-08 accurate pleasant pistol to shoot. Too finely machined which under combat conditions can cause a malfunction. The P-08 also requiesvery consistently loaded ammunition or it will malfunction. I have a Colt M1911A1 .45 automatic pistol. It is a very reliable pistol under combat conditions. It is difficult to learn to shoot because of the powerful cartridge producess strong recoil. The .45 cal cartridge produces really massive wounds. Other pistols I like are the Czechoslovakian cz27 in 7.65mm, the walther mod. PP in 7.65mm, the Browning P-35 in 9mm and the Mauser c96in 7.63mm or 9mm.Garry Owen!!!

Thaugh I fiered only a few rounds with pistols (a Romanian "Carpati" and a Beretta 9mm), I've ejoyed very much the experience. For a hunter as I am, used to rifles and shotguns, using a handgun is a radically different sensation. You feel much better the power of the weapon and the aiming is much more difficult.

But, C-2, I can tell you for sure that if you want to enjoy fiering a pistol without braking your wrist you must use both hands to hold the gun. If your're right-handed, just get the gun in the right hand, than place your left hand underneeth the right wrist and use it to stabilise and strengthen the position. Thisway you also have the advantage of aiming more easely, especially with a heavy gun.

By the way, mr. "drillsgt", do you share my oppinion that fiering a pistol on a side (gangster style) is stupid and dangerous? You seamn to have more experience in fiering handguns, so I'd like your oppinion on this. Today I had a controversy with a friend on this matter.

Sorry for thinking that you were a novice in fiering handguns. You should consider thaugh that I couldn't possibly know that.

You've made me very curious thaugh, I'll surely look around to find someone that has a magnum pistol and is willing to let me try a few shots.

About killing the poor animals... I'll not argue about the morality of sprts hunting, but I'd like to make a few things clear to you.

First, I rarely shoot an animal that I'll not cook and eat later. I dislike useless kills. The exceptions are the foxes (that I hunt for their fur) and the animals refeared to as pests (by Romanian hunting law): strained dogs in the forest, "griva" crows, rats, "cotzofene" (engl. ?) and obviousely sick wild animals.

Second, if I shoot an animal I try to make sure I kill it from the 1st shot. I hate to let wounded animals, it's barbaric and useless. For that purpose I believe that I've shooted more shells at target practice that at actual hunting.

Last, but not least, I try to respect the written and the unwritten laws of hunting. I never shoot animals outside the legal period, I avoid shooting at femails (at the species on wich they can be distinguished) and I avoid killing a particular animal if I know that it became rare in that particular area. I never use traps, never try to attract animals with food and I surely like more hunting with the shotgun (that means only 50-60 meters effective range, so the animal has plenty of chances to escape if I'm not good enough) than a rifle&scope.

Theese are not excuses or motivs. My motivations are both the pleasure of hunting and my taste for rabbit stue, roasted duck, fried doves, etc.

Even though the question wasn't directed at myself... I'll take the liberty to tell you about a funny story my firearms safety instructor related to me....

He is also at times responsible for the safe handling of firearms on the premises of movie studios... Well, apparently, this famous actress - whose name he did not mention - decided to shoot a handgun gangster style. Needless to say, one of the ejected cartridges ended up in her cleavage

Scary thing was that she started jumping up and down and all over the place trying to get it out, as the damn thing was hot. All this with a loaded handgun that she was pointing all over the place involuntarily.

I would suspect, additionally to this story, there's an increased risk of eye injury if you try to shoot a handgun 'gangsta' style, among other things.

Dr. V, I agree completely on the gangster way of firing a pistol. You can always tell a professional by the tools he uses and the way he handles them. A rifle , pistol , shotgun are all tools. Holding a pistol sideways is just to look tough, but in the eyes of a professional it only looks stupid, and marks the user as a novice.Garry Owen!

C-2, the round drum is called a snail drum and has a 32 round capacity. This P08 has rifled sights, and a wooden holster/stock. There was one like this that was designed for the Kaiser Wilhelm's withered arm. If my memory serves me correctly, the stock was offset to one side to compensate for his arm. Just for the record, I am an experienced pistol shot, but a far more experienced rifle shot. Garry Owen!

C-2, Yes, to all three. I was a Civil War reenactor for 15 years. I have also fired a Sharps rifle and carbine, rifled muskets and smooth bore muskets, and one really unique revolver a LeMat. The Smith Carbine is a nice little rifle, but for real fun try a Henry or a Spencer. The old guns are a lot of fun, and a great deal more accurate than most people believe. Garry Owen!!!
