Regimentul V Ialomita nr. 23 was formed on 15 July 1891 by the joining of the the 5th Line Infantry Regiment with the 23rd Dorobanti Regiment. It had as garrison Calarasi.

Now the old barracks of Reg. 23 is used for a small unit of engineers, for gendarmes and another segment - the big one is for infantry and store... When i was young, my street was ended in fence of this unit. I speak about what was remained from the old Regiment.
Day after day we play game with soldiers, we "aquire" cigars for them and in exchange we play with his AKMs. This unit used old "Z.B." late... 1982-4 ?! We played games on the terrain of instruction.. and we admired AAA guns with 2 tubes, heavy MG AA 14,5 with 4 tubes, big guns/howitzers, etc. Even today in a part of the barracks is easy to see from the principal street heavy guns, AAA guns and "marmite". When we were children we cry a lot when soldiers are going in aplications and big trucks with towed guns are came out from gates of the unit. Oh, my god! We really cry loud! And our parents tryed to calm us - "they will come back". Parents talk us - soldiers are going to shot with guns at the shooting range. Big guns are need to shoot at long distance, not in our city shooting range. No chance to calm down... All of us thinking about "our" shooting range it was big enough, and our parents are lying, just to calm us... I know manny of oficers and NCOs from that place. Some of the wifes of that mans, was my students at computer operating courses. What you had need from this unit? Maybe i give you some help. Iama |

Iamandi, the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the Royal Army was disbanded at the end of 1945. The 23rd Regiment you know may have a totally different unit.

Well, the reason why i am very interested about this regiment is that my grandfather was a corporal in a signal unit. A few months i've serched for information about this unit and finally i've discovered a book in the public library called "din Campia Baraganului pana in muntii Cehoslovaciei" in wich it talks about the heavy fightings that this division had to put out agaist the german and hungarian forces. In a few days i will put all the informations on a CD to be sure that my work wasnt in vane. |

From what i know this regiment was only in the 10th infantry division, but i shall look out and see if this information is correct.
Also i know that in late 1944 the regiment was fighting near Szelekzy where the 4th infantry division has been decimated. |

The 23rd Infantry Regiment was always part of the 10th Infantry Division. The 20th Infantry Infantry did not even take part in the campaign in Hungary as it was disbanded in November 1944. panzer265 what exactly interests you about the 23rd Infantry Regiment? |

A report made by the 1st Rumanian Army on 30 Oct. 1944 mentions the following:
"the 20th Infantry Division (incl. the 13th, 14th and 23rd Infantry Regiments), as well as the 1st Cavalry Division (incl. the 3rd and 4th Cavalry Regiments) are positioned between Keresztes tanya and Ujkecske [in Hungary], in front of the 7th Army Corps." Unless it's a typo, the information is valid. Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on January 01, 2005 07:06 pm |
