Howdy, all:
The light machine gun would probably have been a French Chauchat-- Philip Haythornthwaite in "A Photohistory of World War I" has pictures of Romanians and Serbs using such. This was probably the worst automatic weapon ever designed, prone to jams and other mechanical failures. The Lebel rifle was a tube- magazine rifle, with all the limitations of the design, and the Berthier (which was also chambered for the 8mm Lebel cartridge) rifle had other limitations-- originally a 3- round Mannlicher clip, although later Berthiers were designed to accept a 5- round clip. I doubt that any French design would improve upon the Mannlichers in use previously, although they might have the advantage of being more readily available. :smg: Best, Diego |
