Hi, I'm wondering what happened to the Romanians drafted in the Hungarian army from occupied Transylvania. My grandfather was one example but since he's reluctant to talk about it, all I could get out of him was that he fought in the Ukraine and was a corporal.
Maybe I can bribe him with a pack of cigarettes... |

I believe you're referring to Northern Transylvania and the 1940-1944 time period.
If so, Rumanian ethnics were drafted in the Honvédség (Royal Hungarian Army) just like any other Hungarian citizens. Some were part of regular infantry or other units, while some were directed towards labour detachments (road and bridge builders, etc.), or other auxiliary positions (cooks, drivers, maintenance, repair, etc.). I believe they could not be officers in what was considered élite units: air force, cavalry, etc. Their situation was similar to the Hungarian ethnics from Southern Transylvania enrolled in the wartime Royal Rumanian Army. BTW, since 1990, many Rumanian ethnics from Transylvania, former members of the Honvédség, receive veteran's pension from the Hungarian State. |
