___________________________________________ There was a first-hand account by a B-24 pilot (1st Lt. John B. McCormick) of his part in the August 1, 1943 raid on Ploesti. I found it in a magazine I got from a newstand here last month. (Eyewitness to War: WWII Air Combat) The article had some good photos and artwork. The badly shot-up aircraft (The Vagabond King) and most of the crew survived that raid, limping into Crete. (Apparently the ack-ack was fierce and accurate.) Most of the aircrew were killed in subsequent sorties. The text can be found @ http://www.thehistorynet.com/ahi/blvagabondraid/ Unfortunately, the photos and artwork which were in the mag. are not on that website. I'd be happy to scan the photos/artwork and send them along if anyone is interested. |

Or you can blame it on the time difference...

Some "nice" views of the Ploesti raid, video from the US army air force. You will need a high speed connection however. Hurry, it stays one week and then is rotated out

I guess Chandernagore's link and some of the photos above would fit better in the Looking for pictures or video on Ploiesti bombing thread.

The oval (actually rectangle ended in half-circles) in the first photo of Cpt. Dens is the horse race course arena of Bucharest. The river is Dambovita.
In the 1980's, very close to the "oval", a 13 level hospital was built. It is the Municipal Hospital of Bucharest. Of course, you couldn't see this in that photo of 1944. Less than 1 kilometer from there is the Cotroceni royal palace. Even at less distance is the Bucharest botanical garden. Both things exist since the XIXth century. |

I thought Casa Scanteii was built on the site of the Bucharest Hippodrome. :?
By the way, Baneasa airport is also visible on the right side of the photo. |

What was the airfield's name during W.W. 2? It does not come up in period documents under this name. |
