It was created on 15 March 1942 through the conversion of the 9th Cavalry Brigade.

In July 1942, the division had 153 officers, 215 NCOs and 7,369 soldiers.

It was one of the few Romanian units that saw action throughout the entire Second World War , from 22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945.
